The Oscars Set Themselves Up For Failure

Nobody expected the Oscars to go well this season. After the unmitigated and awkward disaster presented by the Golden Globes (which you can read about here), we all had very low expectations. But the Oscars did something even the Golden Globes didn’t accomplish; they set themselves up for a hugely embarrassing moment.
Renowned actor and beloved celebrity Chadwick Boseman passed away in August of 2020. His popular role as Marvel superhero Black Panther skyrocketed him to fame, but it was short lived. Before his death, Boseman managed to film a movie called “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” which earned him several awards at the Golden Globes and also got him a nomination for the Oscars’ Best Lead Actor in a Movie/Film.
That nomination is what made the Oscars such a failure. In clear expectation of Boseman winning posthumously, the committee decided to move that category to the very end, making it grander. That would all be fine, of course, except Chadwick Boseman did not win Best Lead Actor this year. In a shocking turn of events, Anthony Hopkins, who starred in “The Father” at a striking 83 years of age, prevailed instead. Although Hopkins was praised for that role, everybody, including the Oscars committee, expected Boseman to win.
The set up and subsequent disappointment surrounding the nominations for Best Actor made the Oscars another failed awards show this season. Better luck next year!
