The Golden Globes Were An Absolute Mess (With A Few Minor Exceptions)

“At This Year’s Golden Globes, You Had to (Not) Be There.”
“This Year’s Golden Globes Were the Wrong Kind of Mess.”
“Technical Glitches Weren’t The Only Disasters On Tone Deaf HFPA Ceremony.”
These are just a few of the headlines describing the 2021 Golden Globes. Based on accounts from reporters, celebrities, and viewers alike, it was a bit of a disaster. From technical difficulties to awkward speeches, it certainly didn’t pan out like the fun filled celebration we are all used to. Nevertheless, there were some standout moments.
We were all devastated when Chadwick Boseman passed away earlier this year from cancer. An immensely talented actor, he is most known for his leading role in “Black Panther.” This year, the Golden Globes honored him posthumously with the coveted award of Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama, for his role in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.”
Another rare moment of joy in the Golden Globes, at least for me personally, was the nomination and subsequent win of the hit Canadian comedy “Schitt’s Creek.” As I said in my “Top 10 TV Shows of 2020” article, I absolutely love this show and I think it deserves all of the award love. I’m so glad it not only dominated at the Emmys, but at the Golden Globes as well.
Finally, these victories did not involve the winning of an actor, film, or show, but rather the absence of it. Two very controversial nominations managed to worm their way into the Golden Globes roster this year… Sia’s much-hated movie “Music” about autism and James Corden’s portrayal of a gay man in “The Prom,” which was also harshly criticized. Thankfully, neither of these options prevailed in their respective categories.
Another nominee that I was glad to see not win in both the categories of Best Actress and Best TV Show (Musical/Comedy) was “Emily In Paris.” While I have not watched the widely mocked show, I have seen enough scathing reviews to know it is not awards material. In fact, it was ridiculed quite mercilessly by iconic comedy duo Amy Poehler and Tina Fey in the Golden Globes introductions. Not only that, but the writer of “Emily In Paris” herself came forward to admonish the Golden Globes for not nominating the much praised TV show “I May Destroy You,” which did not receive any award nominations this season despite radical reviews. “I May Destroy You” also had a very diverse cast, something the Golden Globes was certainly lacking this year.
All in all, it was an awkward, strange, entertaining mess. But you know what? The Golden Globes did the bare minimum. And at this point, that’s all you can ask for. You can check out the full list of Golden Globes winners here.
