About the Winged Weekly:
The Winged Weekly is Eastern Middle School's nine-year-old scholastic news source - that demonstrates journalism that is alive and well in Silver Spring, Maryland. The Winged Weekly, previously called The Golden Eagle, The Eagle Chronicle and The Eagle Eye has, throughout its history, been an online newspaper that is written and edited by students, with a mission of expanding the boundaries of scholastic journalism. The Winged Weekly pursues this goal online with additional elements of video, multimedia and consistent updates. Silver Spring, MD is a suburban community with a population of 80,000. Eastern Jr. High School, as it was originally named, was built in 1951. Westland Jr. High School was built that same year. Together, they were the third and fourth middle schools in Montgomery County with only the Takoma-Silver Spring School and the Takoma Park Jr. High predating them. Both Eastern and Westland were named for the geographic areas of Montgomery County that they served.
Eastern Middle School currently has an enrollment of around 1,000 students. The Winged Weekly covers a wide range of topics, from Sports to World News. Eastern Middle School's Newspaper Club, meets most Tuesdays through zoom, with their advisor Mr. Scheib. All students interested in journalism are encouraged to participate and should contact Mr.Scheib for the zoom link. The website is published weekly on Tuesday at 5:30.
