What’s The Deal With the Addison Rae-Jimmy Fallon Drama?

Addison Rae appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on March 26, 2021 in what promised to be a generic, forgettable interview. However, the episode turned out to be a trigger for a much bigger issue; the suppression of people of color on Addison Rae’s platform of choice, TikTok.
Stars such as Addison Rae who have entered the spotlight in these past few years have mostly done so through social media. With 15 second dances, makeup routines, and lots of gossip, the small group of attractive 16-21 year olds have taken Gen Z by storm. Unfortunately, not all of their content is original.
Many of the dances performed by the likes of Charli D’Amelio, Josh Richards, and Addison Rae herself were created by people (especially young women) of color. The creators in question are rarely tagged or credited in the videos of the stars, even though those videos are wracking up millions of views.
It seems that Addison’s appearance on The Tonight Show was the last straw. In a short segment, Rae did various TikTok dances as Jimmy Fallon held up the names of said dances. The creators of the dances were neither featured nor credited. This caused an uproar, especially on Twitter, where the stars of TikTok aren’t particularly active but are still discussed at length.
Now Addison Rae and the rest of her “squad” are facing intense backlash. There are rumors that the creators of the dances featured on The Tonight Show will be appearing at some point, but they have not been confirmed. While some people may continue to not support Rae, we have seen the influencer apology pattern enough times to know what comes next. In a month, if not sooner, the whole thing will be forgotten, without any more credit to the POC creators (who you can find at this link).
