It may only be the beginning of February, but I think we all know who the breakout star of 2021 is. This 17-year-old singer songwriter has been writing original music and starring on a popular TV show for a few years now, but only in the past month did she achieve true fame.
Olivia Rodrigo debuted her hit single “Driver’s License” on January 8th, 2021, and immediately drew praise from fans and celebrities alike. Even the legendary Taylor Swift commented on one of Rodrigo’s Instagram posts, writing: “I say that’s my baby and I’m really proud,” followed by a string of emojis. The song also debuted at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 and broke dozens of records, such as most streamed song on Spotify, most requested song on Alexa, and more.
Many people, especially those in the Gen-Z age range, relate to the pure emotion behind Olivia’s song. Everything, including the title, is very youthful and fresh-faced. And that’s not to mention the amazing writing and tune. The bridge, especially, has gained a lot of popularity due to its unique structure. As the music escalates, Rodrigo croons; “red lights, stop signs. I still see your face in the white cars, front yards.”
There is, of course, one other part of the song that has attracted attention, and that is the complicated teenage drama. While some believe the entire story to be an intricate PR stunt, most fans are very invested in the outcome. Essentially, the rumor is that Olivia is trapped in a love triangle with fellow Disney actors Sabrina Carpenter and Joshua Bassett, both of whom have released singles that seem to pertain directly to their supposed situation. While none of them have corroborated the rumors, they also haven’t shut them down, leading to even more internet fervor.
But whether the instant popularity of this song is due to quality, gossip, or marketing, there is no denying that it is a total hit. Olivia Rodrigo is one to watch! You can stream “Driver’s License” everywhere, and watch her TV show “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series” on Disney+. You can also view the “Driver’s License” music video on YouTube.
