Presidential Pets are Back!

Champ and Major Biden, who are both German Shepherds, arrived at the White House on Sunday, January 24. The Bidens adopted Champ in 2008. During Biden’s campaign for Vice-President in 2008, his father would always say “any time you get knocked down, champ, get up!” Champ’s name was chosen by President Biden’s grandchildren because of this. After fostering Major, they adopted him from the Delaware Humane Society in 2018, a decade after Champ. He is the first pet to live in the White House that was adopted from a shelter.
According to a spokesperson for Dr. Jill Biden, “The First Family wanted to get settled before bringing the dogs down to Washington from Delaware. Champ is enjoying his new dog bed by the fireplace and Major loved running around on the South Lawn.” They are the first dogs to live at the White House since Bo and Sunny Obama, Portuguese Water Dogs, who moved out in 2017.
In addition to the two First Dogs, Dr. Jill Biden has announced that she would “love to get a cat.” Jen Psaki, the White House press secretary, said “I’m also wondering about the cat, because the cat is going to dominate the internet whenever the cat is announced and wherever the cat is found.”
On Jan. 26, the Delaware Humane Society and Pumpkin Pet Insurance held an “Indoguration” for Major, a virtual fundraiser helping dogs like Major find their forever-homes. It raised over $200,000, and was the world’s largest virtual event for dogs.
We are looking forward to seeing more of Champ and Major, as well as a First Cat, during these four years!
