2020 has been such a crazy year for everyone around the world. A big impact of the pandemic is that so many people are losing their jobs. Many people who work at local restaurants, or small businesses have struggled during this time. They don’t have the same resources as big corporations for creation and distribution. Many were laid off to save money or their workplace was completely shut down. This can make a huge impact on someone’s life, especially if they already make low wages. 1 in 6 Americans could face hunger. This is a large percentage of the population, which is why food banks have proven to be lifesaving this year.
Food banks have always been helpful for low wage families or workers, but in the light of the pandemic they’ve gained a lot of awareness. More than 80% of food banks are serving significantly more people than prior years. This is great, as many people are finding ways to get food and support. However, due to the demand, there are also numerous people who aren’t getting what they need. Currently in the US, it is estimated that 50 million people could be starving because of the pandemic.
But you can help by finding local food banks and donating money to them. During the pandemic, this will actually help more than donating real food as they can keep paying their workers and keep running their food bank. Most of their websites will also explain the specifics of how the money you donate will be used. For more information on how you can support food banks, check out Feeding America's site and their articles on COVID-19. You can make a difference!
