Some people have house cats, but none of us have wildcats. Wildcats are the cats that live in the wild. For example, the fast cheetah, the water-loving tiger, and the roaring lion. Each has unique characteristics and traits.
Tigers
Tigers, unlike your traditional wildcat, like water. Another thing that is unique and different about them is that they rely more on sight and sound instead of smell to hunt. They can consume over eighty pounds of meat at one time. Tigers are solitary, like chipmunks, with the exception of the mother and her young. A mother tiger has from two to four cubs every two years. Tigers become independent at the age of two, and they have been known to reach the age of twenty before dying.
Lions
Lions are supposedly the “king of the jungle”, but they live in grasslands and plains. These fuzzy creatures are carnivores, so they eat meat. Some of the animals they eat are antelopes, giraffes, wild dogs, buffalo, and hippopotamuses. The females go hunting, and the males guard the territory. Lions live in “prides”, which consists of about fifteen lions.
Cheetahs
These cats are the fastest land animals in the world. They have long legs that help them with running. This species can run up to seventy miles per hour. Cheetahs have yellow or tan fur, with black spots on it. They can grow up to 4.5 feet long and a cheetah mother can have three to five cubs at one time. To call her cubs, a cheetah mother chirps.
Leopards
Leopards are a large type of wildcat. They weigh from sixty to two-hundred pounds. Their natural weapons are sharp teeth and long claws. Most of the leopards who live in the wild live in Asia and Africa. They eat zebras, deer, and birds. The females give birth to two or three cubs at one time. They live for fifteen to twenty years. Mother leopards bring their cubs into trees to keep them safe.
Cougars
Cougars are native to North America, Central America, and South America. They live in forests, mountains, and deserts. One amazing thing about cougars is that they can jump 15 feet. They feed on small mammals such as deer, rabbits, and elk. In addition to the name “cougars”, they are called mountain lions.
