If you are on the popular app TikTok (or even just a teenager in general), you’ve probably heard of the Hype House. This group of content creators has taken social media by storm with their confidence, dance moves, and buckets of teen drama. Well, it looks like they are taking advantage of their sudden popularity, because the Hype House is getting a reality TV show on Netflix. The only problem is, no one wants it.
The Hype House has a very large and loyal fan following. Most (if not all) of them have hundreds of millions of followers. But most of the world does not view them as real celebrities and are, to be frank, tired of the attention that they are getting. But Netflix is smart to hone in on something that has been very popular in the past--trashy reality TV. Netflix’s original reality shows “Too Hot To Handle” and “Love Is Blind” both debuted at #1 for several weeks straight after their release.
But Netflix miscalculated in one crucial way… when those people criticized the Hype House, they meant it. They really meant it. In fact, those people are threatening to cancel their Netflix subscriptions entirely and switch to Hulu and Disney+, which are gaining in popularity nonetheless. Disney+, especially, is becoming a common subscription service because it hosts the entirety of the immensely popular Marvel universe.
It remains to be seen whether Netflix executives will give in to the peer pressure and cancel the Hype House series. But for now, it looks like they will be continuing with the risky gambit to film the series. I, for one, am curious to see whether the show will crash or soar.
