As most people know, Google is a billion dollar company with billions of users that provides worldwide service without a fee. However, what most people don't know is that they also host a huge art competition every year that gives you, a student, a chance to be featured in their company. Anyone in grades K-12 can enter and has a chance to win scholarships, money for their school, and a lot more. Interested? Get ready for Doodle for Google 2021.
This competition allows students to create their own “Google Doodle”. If you use google often, you may have noticed that sometimes on the homepage of their search engine there is a drawing as their logo. They turn letters into different objects, shapes, or colors to represent a chasertain day or remembrance. This being said, every year there is a theme for what the “doodle” is, like how the doodles on the database are centered around a specific day. When it comes to 2021, the prompt is “I am strong because…,” encouraging students to create artwork based on their personal strong suits and capabilities. Some past prompts have been “I show kindness by…,” “when I grow up I hope…,” and “what I see for the future…”! These are only a few, as this competition has been going on since 2008, almost 13 years.
Now that you know a bit more backstory, you might be wondering if you should enter, or if it’s worth it or not. Considering that it is completely free to sign up and you could help your school or your future, it definitely is. In fact, not only is it free, but it is also super easy. You can go to https://doodles.google.com/d4g/how-it-works/ to see the steps you can take to join! This is a great opportunity, and you could win huge prizes (which you can also find more about here). Remember to read the rules and restrictions before you submit, as you will get disqualified if they do not fit. The main things you should avoid are copyright symbols, copying or tracing, and using derogatory terms or ideas.
Though this is a really fun competition, it may be hard to come up with ideas or be creative with it. Google has some ideas to help you start the process of coming up with an idea. You can take a look at the educator resources section on the Doodle for Google site to see all of the videos and help. Another tip that might be useful is to think outside of the box. Maybe instead of thinking about how you are physically strong, think about what you use to lift yourself or others up when you are feeling down, or how you are mentally strong through school or other challenges and activities.
Overall, this contest is great for young artists who want to start learning about competitions and entering them. It could also give you a different perspective on how you see things after you have looked through the art people put out. What are you waiting for? Go out and enter some art!
