Firestorm is the story of a poor girl named Poppy who has to pickpocket to get by and a boy named Justin whose father owns a jewelry store. They meet when they crash into each other in the front of the store and become fast friends. Poppy begins to change her pickpocketing ways but when she is forced to flee, Justin runs after. Unfortunately for him, that is when the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 breaks out.
This historical fiction novel was written by author Joan Hiatt Harlow, who has also written many popular historical novels such as The Night Ponies and Shadows On The Sea.
While this book is not as long as other historical novels, it is a very good book for kids and teenagers. The book is very easy to read, making it good for people of different ages, but it explores darker topics such as poverty, greed, and death.
If I had to rate this book on a scale from one to ten, I would give it an eight. While it is very good and has a very interesting plot, some of the main actions are very anticlimactic. While this book has its fair share of action, if you are looking for a book about adventure, this book is probably not for you. However, it is very heartfelt and talks about real human relationships.
