Billie Eilish Gives Credit to Megan Thee Stallion in the Grammys, Continuing a Trend

During the Grammys on Sunday, Billie Eilish won for her song “Everything I Wanted,” making it the second consecutive song of hers to win Record of the Year. But the first thing she said when she walked onto the stage was “this is really embarrassing for me.” She went on to say over and over how Megan Thee Stallion should have won, and invited the crowd to applaud her.
Though Billie Eilish continued the trend, many white artists have been “embarrassed” by their win in countless categories, saying it should have gone to someone else, generally a minority artist. This can be credited to backlash against white artists when they win, or just a feeling of undeserving.
As Eilish has been nominated countless times and won many awards, some people are getting tired of her constant wins. Though she’s very deserving of her success, many think the 19 year-old artist is taking the spotlight away from minority artists with smaller followings and give her a hard time when she wins. This is probably one of the biggest reasons she is self-deprecating in terms of her talent.
My opinion is that, though Billie Eilish deserves the spotlight, people in charge of the Grammys should make sure that there is a diverse group of people being celebrated, and that nominees are not attacked or judged because of their background. This goes for not only Billie Eilish, but also artists like Megan Thee Stallion.
