President Joseph R. Biden was sworn into office a bit over a week ago. Even though he has very recently taken this position, he has done a tremendous amount of work. From LGBTQ+ rights to mask mandates, here is your update on what is happening in the U.S.
Covid 19/Heath
To start, he has done a lot with Covid-19 vaccine distribution and overall reducing the spread of the virus. It is now required that on all federal properties masks are worn. Though he does not have the power to make a national mask mandate, they are still highly enforced and recommended all across the U.S. Scientific studies show that these reinforcements will lower the chance of the virus spreading and the number of deaths significantly. Plus, he is working out different vaccine distribution plans to get it out to the right people. All of this being said, we can expect even more Covid related rules and regulations to be put in place as the presidency continues.
Minority Rights
Minority groups all around the U.S. have been struggling a lot, especially in the light of the pandemic. One of this first things Biden did in office was repeal the transgender military ban. LGBTQ+ advocates are thrilled as he is opening up more and more opportunities that everyone can participate in without discrimination. Biden has also made new reinforcements or rules that implement and accept immigrants more than they did before. Seeing that there are so many immigrants in the country, it is a big step to see them as a part of it.
Climate Change
On only the first day of his presidency, Biden signed back on to the Paris Climate Agreement. This agreement is meant to save the earth from global warming and other large climate problems. In 2015, the US was removed from it, as former President Trump said it would worsen the economy and lead it to its downfall. However, according to a lot of advocates, climate change is more important than the economy due to the time pressure we have on the climate. In the long run they may be right, considering the worsening state of the earth.
Other
Though he has already changed or created a lot of major laws and rules, Biden has also done a lot of minor things that are just as important and beneficial . For example, he hired a sign language interpreter for all press briefings to aid deaf and hard of hearing. This is especially beneficial to the idea of creating an inclusive country for all. Another minor change is the number of interviews and press briefings that are happening at the White House and just in general. These keep the country updated and on the same page as the government.
Throughout only his first week in office, Biden has signed a total of 40+ executive actions to benefit the nation. However, there is still a lot more to come and change throughout the next four years on these same topics and ideas.
